João Taborda da Gama on Combating Antisemitism
Earlier this month founding partner João Taborda da Gama published an opinion article, in Diário de Notícias, on the prevention and combat of antisemitism. As the Portuguese National Coordinator of the European Strategy to Combat Antisemitism and Promote Jewish Life, he is responsible for supporting the implementation of the European strategy at the national level and strengthening Portugal’s institutional response to antisemitism. His opinion essay addressed the growing urgency of the issue in Portugal and across Europe, arguing that combating antisemitism is a moral and political responsibility that requires clarity, consistency, and the use of shared criteria. Highlighting the importance of systematic monitoring of incidents, and the role of clear definitions — including the working definition adopted by Portugal — he explored the risks associated with failing to name and address antisemitic acts in public space.
The publication coincided with João’s participation in the 8th Working Group meeting on the implementation of the EU Strategy on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, in Brussels. Katharina von Schnurbein, European Coordinator on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, served as chairwoman for the meeting, which also featured Magnus Brunner, Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, European Commission. National Coordinators gathered from across EU Member States, to align approaches at the continental level. Panelists discussed challenges facing European Jewish communities in the aftermath of 7 October 2023, including new strategies and progress in addressing antisemitic sentiment, in its traditional as well as its novel manifestations, from the real world to online spaces. After the meeting, participants attended a Holocaust Remembrance Conference guided by the motto “Remembering the past. Shaping the Future.”
Together, the publication of the article and the Brussels meeting situate this work within a broader institutional process, combining national responsibility with European coordination.

João Taborda da Gama sobre o Combate ao Antissemitismo
No início deste mês, o sócio fundador João Taborda da Gama publicou um artigo de opinião no Diário de Notícias sobre a prevenção e o combate ao antissemitismo. Na qualidade de Coordenador Nacional da Estratégia Europeia de Combate ao Antissemitismo e Promoção da Vida Judaica, é responsável por apoiar a implementação da estratégia europeia a nível nacional e por reforçar a resposta institucional de Portugal ao antissemitismo. No seu ensaio, abordou a urgência crescente desta questão em Portugal e na Europa, defendendo que o combate ao antissemitismo constitui uma responsabilidade moral e política que exige clareza, consistência e o recurso a critérios partilhados. Ao destacar a importância da monitorização sistemática de incidentes e o papel de definições claras — incluindo a definição de trabalho adotada por Portugal — analisou os riscos associados à falha em nomear e enfrentar atos antissemitas no espaço público.
A publicação coincidiu com a participação do João na 8.ª reunião do Grupo de Trabalho sobre a implementação da Estratégia da UE para o combate ao antissemitismo e a promoção da vida judaica, realizada em Bruxelas. @Katharina von Schnurbein, Coordenadora Europeia para o combate ao antissemitismo e a promoção da vida judaica, presidiu à reunião, que contou também com a presença de @Magnus Brunner, Comissário para os Assuntos Internos e Migração da Comissão Europeia. Coordenadores Nacionais de vários Estados-Membros da UE reuniram-se para alinhar abordagens a nível europeu. Os oradores analisaram os desafios que as comunidades judaicas europeias enfrentam na sequência de 7 de outubro de 2023, incluindo novas estratégias e progressos na resposta ao sentimento antissemita, nas suas manifestações mais tradicionais e nas mais recentes, tanto no mundo físico como nos espaços digitais. Após a reunião, os participantes estiveram presentes numa Conferência de Evocação do Holocausto subordinada ao lema “Recordar o passado. Moldar o futuro.”
Em conjunto, a publicação do artigo e a reunião em Bruxelas inserem esta função num processo institucional mais amplo, que combina responsabilidade nacional com coordenação europeia.
